New idea's

I currently make the majority of the items that I sell online with a scroll saw.  The reason I do this is because I don't like wasting materials, and with the scroll saw it allows you to make so many small and unique items if you are careful in planing there isn't much waste but I always seem to have a box of scraps that I am not willing to throw away in hopes that I will come up with an idea where they can be used. Well after my husband John had fun picking on me about my boxes of small scrap that I should throw away, I talked him into helping me design some new items to use these scraps so they were not totally wasted. Of course he first looked at me like I was nuts!  Then we started throwing ideas around, and we finally came up with something we both thought would be a nice addition to the other items we offer for sale. These are small items but also inexpensive and will make great gifts when you don't have alot of money to spend. The new line of items we will be offering are desk sets/desk items. I am making pen and pencil cups to hold those pens and pencils, and paper clip cup to hold those paperclips so they are not all over your desk. They are constructed from small pieces of hardwood that I have left from other items I make and some are made from one kind of hardwood while others are made from different rings I have cut out of different kinds of wood and then put them together and sand, sand and sand.  There will be a nice new line of items available real soon, many different colors and styles.  If you have a special combination that you think you would like let me know and we will give it a try and see if you like it.  The picture I have included is some of the items I have started, keep in mind they are not finished yet, but this give you an idea of what they look like.  I love the fact that working with wood is a renewable resource but I am very conscious of the amount of waste I have because for one the woods I use are premium grades and they are really expensive, and the fact that I just don't feel I am doing much good if I make a item like a candy dish and I throw away more than I use.  So keep in mind when I plan to make something I try to arrange the item so any leftover wood can also be utilized within another item or goes in this box I have been talking about, and now hopefully the box won't be overflowing and maybe I can create a smaller area of my shop for these items. Take a look at these new items and let me know what you think.

It sure seems like it has been a long winter!

I sure will be glad when we see spring just around the corner.  I have been working in my shop on the days it atleast gets above 20 degrees because otherwise the cold seems to go right through me.  I cut out the projects and then bring them in the house to do the finishing touches like sanding and finishing. I will be posting new projects to the shop on etsy to make them available for sale. Unfortunately I haven't got as much accomplished as I would have liked but a few really nice items.  I did get a few scalloped candy dishes done in a variety of hardwoods and also a peanut/candy dish which is made from oak hardwood and bubinga which is another exotic hardwood. I also have completed a nice candle stand which really looks great with a 3" candle nestled atop.  I will post pictures of the completed items within the next post. Thank You for following. Lets all think spring and maybe it will come faster. The nice warmth in the sun sure feels like it wants to come.

New wood projects

I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful weather in the northeast this summer.  Anyway I spent the end of last week and the beginning of this week finishing projects that had been started.  I did complete many new items I had been making .  I finished a bear cub that I was anxious to see how it would come out, and it looks great. I am looking forward to making his companion.  I finished a couple smaller owls I had been working on, completed a rocking horse I had been working on lately, and I was able to start working on some new delicate Christmas ornaments that I will show later in the week.  I have a couple new orders that I must get working on and I will take some pictures along the way to keep you up to date on my progress so you can see how they come along as I go.  I also have some early Christmas orders that I need to start working on because it comes fast and I get quite busy and I like to get those orders done as soon as possible, best I can tell you is stop back on Friday and I will try to get some pictures of the items I have been telling you about.  I love to share with you the items I have been working on and I would like to thank all the people who e-mail me with questions and comments about my work.  If you are looking for a special handmade item to give for birthdays or Christmas you can go to http://www.backyardwooddesigns.etsy.com/ and check out some of the great items available for order or if you have something special in mind just send me a picture and any details and I will get back to you and we can discuss the many options available.  Just a reminder stop back Friday to checkout the new photo's. Thanks for stopping by.

Look who is looking at you

This is one of the most recent items I have made.  It is a Great Horned Owl and he has rested on a 4x4 post!  This Owl is cut from 2"x12" Pine, then sanded and finished with a oak stain and also 2 coats of a protective finish to protect from the elements of mothernature.
I am offering some of my handmade items for sale on my storefront site on backyardwooddesigns.etsy.com and also if you live close you can purchase directly from my shop in Stillwater, New York.  I really enjoy making these wildlife projects.  The next project is a bearcub which I will post pictures and information as I go along so you can really see how much work goes into these wood items.  E-mail me for more information if you have any questions.

Most Recent Project

This little rocking horse is meant for children up to 2 years old. This was sure alot of fun. Working on it regularly just wanting to get it finished because it was looking realy good and all I could think about is how much fun someones child would have with this little pony.  I make these out of pine lumber and can be finished in either oak, maple or clear stain.  I also make them in other woods also like oak, maple.  There are alot of great options available.
